OPay Deepens Social Impact with ₦6M Scholarships to UNICAL Students

Leading Nigerian fintech company OPay has extended its ₦1.2 billion 10-year scholarship initiative to the University of Calabar (UNICAL), awarding ₦6 million in funding to 20 exceptional students. The development cements OPay’s growing influence in educational empowerment and its long-term strategy to support Nigeria’s youth.

The scholarship presentation, which took place at UNICAL’s campus in Cross River State, marks the eighth institutional partnership in the ongoing scheme, designed to support 400 students across 20 tertiary institutions over a decade.

Welcoming the intervention, Prof Florence Obi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, described it as a timely response to students’ growing financial pressure. “OPay’s generosity is deeply appreciated. This scholarship programme, in addition to the existing support schemes, will help many of our students and also inspire and encourage them to excel in their academics,” she said. She added that “some students face some challenges, which often lead to deferment of their academic session or dropping out because they can’t afford their charges.”

Beyond tuition assistance, OPay executives emphasized the program’s broader ambition. “This scholarship is not just financial aid, but a stepping stone to a better future,” said IK Odiase, Head of Partnerships at OPay. “We are not only offering funds, we are opening doors to internship opportunities, job placements, and long-term collaboration.”

The firm’s CSR Manager, Itoro Udo, reinforced the long-term vision: “This initiative is only the beginning of deeper engagements across institutions. We’re looking at opportunities that will outlast the present and create sustainable value for students and the institution.”

Rhenua Adebo, OPay’s Marketing Manager, added: “We want students to see their peers benefiting and be inspired. Scholarships are just the start. We are interested in their holistic growth, including sport, digital skills, and visibility on campus.”

OPay’s scholarship drive continues to expand, having already reached students at the University of Ilorin, Obafemi Awolowo University, Kwara State Polytechnic, FUTMINNA, Benue State University, and others. The programme reflects the fintech company’s strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital — one that blends education, opportunity, and community impact.
